Fishing Information

Fishing Season

The best months for fishing on the KZN South Coast are generally during the autumn and winter months (April to August), especially for shore fishing, to coincide with the annual Sardine Run. During this period, you can expect numerous shad and other popular species like garrick and kob, while summer months are better for catching bigger offshore pelagic species like tuna and sailfish.

Best Time of Day

Early mornings and late evenings: are often more productive than bright midday sun.

Recommended Bait & Lures

For KZN South Coast fishing, recommended baits vary by target species: use whole sardines and mackerel for shad, pink/red prawn for bream and pompano, and pink prawn or chokka for grunter and kob. Live bait like mackerel or redeye is excellent for larger game fish such as dorado and tuna, especially when found near bait shoals and color lines. For inedible sharks, use mackerel or bonito.

Recommended Rods & Reels

consider rods like the Daiwa BG Power Spin (10.6" or 11.6") for general surf spinning with heavier lures, or Okuma Matrix 10ft for shad and other spinning applications. For targeting smaller species or for lures like buzz bombs, a 7'6" Kokanee rod with a 2000 series reel can be effective. For power and brute force when fishing in heavy structure for bigger species, a 9ft to 11ft rod with a powerful reel is a better choice.

Recommended Clothing & Waders

You should wear clothing suitable for a tropical or subtropical climate, such as light, breathable layers, a hat, and polarized sunglasses, and always pack sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong sun. Additionally, wear comfortable, non-slip footwear and choose clothing that won't restrict your movement for casting and reeling in fish.

Recommended Fishing Techniques

Live bait, trolling in freshwater or estuaries. For shore-based fishing, methods like power fishing with chatterbaits or spinnerbaits are effective for covering water. On cloudy or light rainy days, fish are more active and come closer to shore, creating excellent feeding opportunities.

Important Information

Permits Required:
To fish on the KZN South Coast, you need a Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) Recreational Fishing Permit for angling or spearfishing, which can be obtained online through the DFFE's e-Permitting system.
